Historic St. Mary's City Fort to 400 Commission

The Historic St. Mary's City Fort to 400 Commission leads planning for Maryland's 400th anniversary, commemorating the state's founding in 1634 and its history and cultural heritage.

Created by the Maryland General Assembly in 2021 - PDF, the Commission brings together state, regional and cultural partners to plan commemorative activities with lasting educational, cultural and economic benefits.

What the Commission Does

The Commission works to:

  • Plan and coordinate activities and events commemorating Maryland's 400th anniversary.
  • Identify, document and preserve historical and cultural resources related to Maryland's founding.
  • Support museums, historic sites and educational institutions in interpreting and sharing this history.
  • Promote the commemoration nationally and internationally.
  • Support development of educational resources about Maryland's founding.
  • Create lasting public benefits from anniversary activities and events.
  • Identify resources and partnerships to support commemorative programs.
  • Coordinate economic development opportunities in and around St. Mary's City.
